Students at a school in Castlemaine, Australia received a visit from the Royal Australian Air Force balloon crew\u00a0on Monday.<\/p>\n

A hot air balloon piloted by air force personal\u00a0dazzled students from St Mary’s and Castlemaine primary schools.<\/p>\n

St Mary’s deputy principal Loris Stone said the students were delighted to hear about the air force.<\/p>\n

RAAF Pilot Damian Gilchrist.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

Pilot Damian Gilchrist said\u00a0RAAF crews visit\u00a0schools across Australia to help develop children\u2019s understanding of aviation and science.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a way the general public can get close to aviation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey can come up and touch and feel the balloon.”<\/p>\n

Australia\u2019s first RAAF pilot, Lieutenant Eric Harrison, was a former pupil of Castlemaine Primary School.<\/p>\n

Castlemaine Primary School principal Peter McConnell said the students were currently studying a unit on Australia at war\u00a0and that the RAAF visit was a fantastic way of introducing them to the topic.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a great way for our kids to learn a little about the history,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He said it was especially poignant for the kids to think that one of the founding fathers of the RAAF went to their school all those years ago.<\/p>\n

The balloon will travel to locations around Victoria before heading to\u00a0Point Cook for the Centenary of Military Aviation 2014 Air Show on March 1 and 2.<\/p>\n
