Balloons lift off for annual Wairarapa festival

The skies above Wairarapa will be full of hot air balloons for the next few days – but it’s not just fun and games for those taking part.

More than 20 balloons will be lifting off for the annual festival, which is also a significant hot air balloon competition.

Organiser Jonathan Hooker says the balloonists will be set tasks in two categories during the festival.

“Them having to take off from somewhere and fly into a target and then the other where they all take off together and have to do things on the way. Mainly things on the take off area that they have to try and hit a target or put something into a target.”

The festival kicks off this morning and runs until Sunday.
