Hot air balloon tweet pulled for ‘poor timing’

Tourism NT has removed a social media comment posted by its Singapore team promoting a ballooning company involved in a fatal accident at Alice Springs this month.

Sydney woman Steph Bernoth, 35, died last Friday from injuries she sustained when her long scarf got caught in an inflation fan while she waited to go for a hot-air balloon ride near the Northern Territory town.

Yesterday, Tourism NT posted a tweet saying: “Alice Springs is even more breathtaking from over 1,200 feet above ground … on a hot air balloon!”

The tweet was accompanied by a picture of hot-air balloons from Outback Ballooning, the company now under investigation by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau.

Tourism NT says the timing of the post was poor, and the tweet was taken down because it did not wish to cause any further hurt to the parties involved.
