Navy manned airship lands at Dobbins
The United Sates Navy’s only airship, the MZ-3A stopped over at Dobbins Air Reserve Base, Ga. Dec. 14-16 on its way to a winter location in central Florida. While at Dobbins, research scientists from the Georgia Institute of Technology took measurements for systems integration work.
The MZ-3A based out of Patuxent River, Md., is government owned and contractor operated. The slow moving, vibration free airship serves as a low cost operation flying laboratory used to test sensors and multi-intelligence suites for DoD and other governmental agencies.
An example of the airships usefulness was in July 2010, it was deployed to Gulf Shores, Al. to assist in the Deepwater Horizon oil spill recovery operation.
