New Mexico bids to host 2016 World Hot Air Balloon Championships
The state of New Mexico hosted the first ever World Hot Air Balloon Championships in 1973 and now State Governor Susana Martinez is leading the bid to have the Championships return ‘home’ for 2016.
Thirteen countries took part in the 1973 Championships. Since then Albuquerque has been recognised as the world capital of ballooning and every October hosts the largest balloon convention in the world.
The State’s promotional video in support of their bid cites the purpose built fiesta park, ideal weather, extensive local support community and the general beauty and tourism of the South West as reason why the FAI should pick Albuquerque to host the Championships in 2016.
The five-minute promotion video also highlights local attractions such as the Spaceport, White Sands, Carlsbad Caverns and the historic city of Santa Fe and closes with Albuquerque Mayor, Richard Berry, inviting balloonists from around the world to “come him” to the birthplace of the World Hot Air Balloon Championships.
